Denver: A Mile High... A Mile Ahead

An appealing blend of high-tech glitz and down-home warmth, the Colorado capital of today is a far cry from the cattle country of a generation ago. From its glass office towers and gold-plated Capitol dome to its state-of-the-art sports stadiums and sophisticated museums and galleries, Denver has shrugged off its small-town image and become a full-fledged metropolis.

Many people think Denver is in the mountains, but in fact it’s on the plains, surrounded by mountains. On clear days, of which there are many, the dramatic snow-dusted Rockies are clearly visible on the horizon. Denver gets an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, making it one of the brightest spots in the United States.

Although the Colorado capital ranks 20th in the nation’s population, it has the 10th largest downtown; a vibrantly charming area filled with an endless variety of entertainment options. Lower Downtown (or LoDo) is a Victorian warehouse district revitalized by the new Coors Field ball park, loft apartments and a vast collection of brew pubs, sports bars and fine restaurants. Lively 16th Street Mall, lined with red oaks and flower baskets, is a 12-block long pedestrian walkway and one of the city’s shopping hot spots. The impressive Denver Performing Arts Complex is also located in this area. With nine theatres offering opera and symphony, ballet and Broadway, it is the world’s largest performing arts center and, in seating capacity, ranks second only to New York’s Lincoln Center.

With its friendly ambiance, Rocky Mountain backdrop, dazzling blue skies and big city attractions, Denver has all the elements of a great destination.
