Dallas-Fort Worth: Big Attitude, Wide Open Spaces
Dallas and Fort Worth, separated by 30 miles of suburbs, are the unlikeliest of neighbors. Dallas is glitzy and ritzy, a 21st century city with gleaming office towers, elegant restaurants, top-rate museums and soaring suburban homes. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone wearing a Stetson around here. Those are in Fort Worth, which is close enough to be a suburb, but different enough to be its own proud city.
Known to locals as simply “Big D,” Dallas is home to just over 1 million inhabitants, making it the eighth-largest city in the United States. Once a tiny frontier trading post, today this North Texas city is a major center for banking, finance and oil. Fort Worth, meanwhile, offers an intriguing mix of cowboys and culture. Rodeos, honky-tonk bars and Western-themed restaurants are commonplace, yet this town also boasts some of the best art museums in the state, a modern performance center that’s a world treasure and a park network that’s second only in acreage to Chicago’s.
For shopaholics, Dallas is a sin come true. The city that spawned Neiman Marcus has more shopping centers per capita than any other major U.S. city. Mega-malls fan out in every direction, giving both extravagant and thrifty shoppers an endless variety of shopping options.
No matter what time of the year it is, sport is a hot ticket here. The Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, the Mavericks and the Stars all draw huge crowds, while spring brings NASCAR to the Texas Motor Speedway and the bulls to The Mesquite Championship Rodeo.
With its big attitude, wide open spaces and endless variety of entertainment, sports and recreation, Dallas-Fort Worth has everything you need to ride off, happily, into the sunset.
