UCSD Medical Center

The University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center is the only university-based healthcare facility in San Diego, providing cutting-edge patient care, biomedical research, education and community service. UCSD’s clinical facilities include UCSD Medical Center - Hillcrest, Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, Moores UCSD Cancer Center, Shiley Eye Center and several outpatient facilities.

The two hospitals give nurses appealing San Diego neighborhoods to choose from. Hillcrest is a vibrant and quaint community. La Jolla’s Thornton Hospital is located close to pristine beaches and world-class shopping.

While both university hospital locations enjoy outstanding reputations for their healthcare achievements, the two locations provide travelers with distinct experiences of this large city. The Hillcrest hospital is only a few miles from the city’s revitalized downtown and many restaurants and clubs, as well as historic Old Town and Sea World. The La Jolla location gives nurses easy access to that area’s pristine beaches and famous shopping district.

The UCSD Medical Center - Hillcrest is the primary hospital for the UCSD School of Medicine. The 386-bed hospital offers both primary care and specialized services, including a full range of general and specialty surgery, diagnosis and management of genetic diseases, orthopedics, neurology, oncology, and sleep medicine. The hospital is also the primary site for such regional services as the Comprehensive Organ Transplant Program, Bone Marrow Transplantation, the Regional Burn Center, the county’s only Level I Trauma Center and UCSD’s Birth Center.

La Jolla’s 119-bed Thornton Hospital, which opened in 1993, is a general medical-surgical facility that also offers a full range of services, including general and specialty surgery, cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, endocrinology, neurology, reproductive and pulmonary medicine in a comfortable, patient-centered environment.
